Exploring the Layers: Day 57 - A Slow Day In Opatija
We didn't make it very far away from our hotel horizontally today, but it sure seemed liked we climbed a lot. This whole area is 3-d with as much vertical as horizontal.
Since it was a cloudy but very calm day, we focused on the small things rather than the grand vistas. Since it was also a Tuesday in October, we are well past the tourist crush that must overwhelm this place in the summer. This allowed us a slow and intimate afternoon of exploration.
And for all you geology and geophysical buffs out there, this is the birth place of Andrija Mohorovicic. This is the guy who figured out that the earth's crust 'floated' on the inner mantle, and the discontinuity layer between the two has been known as the Moho layer ever since. We had a little celebration of that later in the day (pic's to follow!).
We also ate a little very fresh seafood while sitting inside a cave - actually the cellars of the Honoba Tramerka restaurant, very cool.
Once again I'll let the pictures do the talking.
Song of the Day
On the Nights You Stay Home by Port Cities
..cause we basically 'stayed home' today. I really like this version of this song. We saw them live in Calgary and their harmonies are beautiful.
When we left the hotel this aft we spotted this sign ... this was the road leading to our hotel ... we were going down this morning!
So this is what a 25% grade road looks like from the top ... the camera never gives a true impression of how steep it is. The mtb road we were on two days ago was substantially steeper than this. We did not ride either of them. We were humbled into pushing our loaded bikes!
The sign at the bottom of the hill ... we didn't even notice it in the dark. The tree is strategically growing so as not to discourage custom at the hotel!
