To Avignon
Today's ride was a short, flat cruise alongside the east bank of the Rhone, with nearly all of our time devoted to sightseeing. Our first stop was at the castle at Tarascon - an austere structure rising precipitously from the river, it was originally the home of kings and then later reincarnated as a prison. Besides being very interesting to visit in its own right, it provides terrific views from its ramparts over the town and Rhone valley, and across the river to the castle at Beaucaire.
In Avignon we toured the Palace of the Pope, the famous Pont d' Avignon, and then climbed Les Roche for more fine views of the city and valley. Later in the evening we enjoyed a terrific dinner of chocolate and fondue. For several days afterwards we reminisced on this dinner as the finest meal of the trip so far.
