Kirkwall (ferry to the Shetlands)

After a great breakfast at the B&B we returned to the dig on the Ness of Brodgar hoping to catch the eleven o'clock guided tour.  And what a tour it turned out to be.  The guide, a local archeologist called Sigurd Towrie, kept us entertained and filled us with information for a full one and a half hours.  I have never experienced a guide as good as this before.  Lots of humour and inside knowledge delivered with perfect timing.  To top it all, probably the find of this year's dig turned up this morning and we got to see it close up.

After that it was a gentle cycle back to Kirkwall and the Orkney Caravan Park where, for a small fee, we could use the facilities.  We had a shower, got our laundry done and had supper while we waited for the midnight ferry to take us to the Shetlands.

The ferry port is three kilometers out of town so we will leave here about ten o'clock and cycle down to the ferry terminal.

Today's ride: 31 km (19 miles)
Total: 2,687 km (1,669 miles)
