The Big Roll: Dalgety to Jacobs River

Day 4
Tuesday 25 September 2012
Dalgety to Jacobs River Campground

A very interesting day's riding. It ranged from elevations of 1297 metres to 259 metres. Undulations again gave a high total climb. A lot of climbs including a memorable one not far from Dalgety over the Beloka Range.

A rise of 300 metres in 3 km had us all walking.

Grand views of the snow covered main range and Monaro high plains earlier in the day, and later from high stops such as Wallace Craigie lookout.

Very few vehicles passed. There was some local traffic in the vicinity of Jindabyne but this quickly disappeared as we headed further along the remoteness of the Barry Way.

Day's end saw us roll carefully from the heights near Ingebyra locale on the loose surfaced Barry Way down to Jacobs River.

A superb camping area.

There was another group camped here. From Monash University they were a group of outdoor education trainees preparing to raft from Jacobs River camp to Orbost.

Fantastic views at every turn throughout the day.

Distance 81 km
Average 12.9 km/ hr
Maximum 63 km/ hr
6 hrs 16 mins riding
Vertical climb 1943 metres

A view from Wallace Craigie lookout. Beautiful country as far as we could see. That is where we are going. Down, across and over. There will be some steep and long ascents.

On the way down to Jacobs River on The Barry Way. Magnificent country. Remarkable road. Look closely and you can see Will standing on the curve of the road. He is wearing a green, high vis jacket and smiling.

A remarkably wide track made by ants Australia has one of the greatest number and diversity of ant species anywhere on earth. Other than by mosquitoes, if you are going to get bitten by anything in Australia it will probably be ants. Most are a minor nuisance but some such as bull ants can deliver an almighty painful sting.
