The Isle
Day 5 - July 4th
Sunny
Got up late and had our usual breakfast of oatmeal bagels and breakfast bars. Today is a rest day with a bit of cycling, we will ride out and around the Presque Isle State Park.

We left the camp about 10 a.m. on the bike trail. First stop was the Perry Monument commemorating the battle fought between the British and American fleets in the battle of Lake Erie and won by Captain Perry.
We then rode round to the Presque Isle Lighthouse. I thought it would be closed but was pleasantly surprised that it was open. After paying the admission charge we took a tour which included a climb up the tower.
The Presque Isle Lighthouse was first lit July 12, 1873 and was to replace the 1818 Erie Land Lighthouse lighthouse on the bluff which was extinguished in 1880 but re-lit in 1885.
Holiday homes on the lake.
After the tour we discovered we had missed the Presque Isle North Pierhead Lighthouse. So decided to ride the old lighthouse walking track back across the Isle. The trail was a narrow concrete path which turned to mud in places but we made it and then biked out to the point to see the lighthouse.
The present tower has been in existence since 1857. It was moved to it's current position when the pier was extended in 1940.
We got back to camp at 1 p.m., had lunch then rode to the grocery store to get supplies.
We spent the rest of the day swimming and sitting out in the sun. Cooked our pasta dinner and just hang out.
Watched a brilliant sunset.
Today's ride: 20 miles (32 km)
Total: 192 miles (309 km)
