Kingville, OH to Erie, PA

Day 4 - Beach Camping

Sunny

Woke up around 12:30 a.m. and it was raining. Damn now the tent is wet. Woke up again at 6 a.m. and next thing you know it was raining again, now the tent is really wet. Not the best nights sleep here, freight trains passed through all night and the first night camping is always restless for me.

Got up once the rain stopped and packed up the wet tents sloshing around in the mud. The sun came out as we got going about 8:45 a.m. heading east again on Hwy 531.

Our first stop was Conneaut where I took some photos of the Conneaut Lighthouse. Privately owned and on a breakwater not connected to land I was able to get some distant views. No stamp to collect here either.

The first lighthouse built here was in 1835. The present day lighthouse was lit on April 1, 1936 and is a square, steel tower standing sixty feet tall. This is a sister lighthouse to the Huron Lighthouse built at the same time.

For the last couple of day we have been following Hwy 531, as we left Conneaut we started on Hwy 20 and crossed the Conneaut River.

Just out of Conneaut we crossed the OH PA state line and the roads immediately got better.

The countryside also got more rural. The whole ride through Ohio had been mainly through urban and suburbia. But to counter the lack of traffic and houses, Pennsylvania gave us some rollers.

We detoured off the busier Hwy 20 and got on Hwy 5 and made our way toward Erie where we hoped to get a campsite on the beach at Presque Isle State Park. Being that it was July 4th I had not idea whether we would get a site as it was a first come you have a site situation.

We arrived at 1 p.m. and we were lucky enough to get a site at Sara’s Camp on the beach. We had our lunch while we dried off the tents, then it was a couple of swims and lazing around in the sun.

Dinner was a walk across the road to Stevo’s Pizza where we demolished a 16 inch pizza.

Night came with a nice sunset and a pre 4th of July fireworks show. The amusement park next door still had the roller coasters running when we went to bed and there were some party's down the beach letting off fireworks but tiredness over-came us and we had a good night’s sleep.
