We left camp at 7:15 a.m. and biked through Erie. Cameron wanted to visit the local ice hockey arena so we detoured a couple of blocks to see the home of the Erie Otters.
Next we visited the Erie Land Lighthouse.
Here is the history of the light:
The lighthouse was not open to tour but we had picked up the stamp yesterday at the Presque Isle Lighthouse.
We cleared town about 8:30 a.m.
Later in the morning, we stopped at the NY state line for photos and another snack.
We arrived in Barcelona at 12 noon. Stopping at the gas station/restaurant for a Lake Erie Perch fish sandwich as recommended by our WS host Jeremy. It was good and filling plus the two cokes gave us the energy to finish the day.
After lunch we visited the Barcelona Lighthouse.
Built in 1829 from native, rough-split, fieldstone. The tower is 40 foot high and the base diameter is 22 feet. The keeper’s dwelling and outhouse are built out of the same local stone.
In 1831, the lighthouse was the first public building to be supplied natural gas which was sourced locally.
The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1872.
We left Barcelona about 1:30 p.m. after visiting with the visitor center folks who were custodians of the lighthouse.
An hour later we spotted the sign for the Lake Erie State Park and pulled in.
At the camp we meet Colleen, who was camped close by. Colleen has a blog http://superbikerwoman.blogspot.ca/ and is doing the Northern Tier from Minnesota then turning back and coming back through Canada.
After setting up the tents we rode over to the beach for a swim. The water was a bit colder than Erie and there was a stone beach.
After dinner Colleen came over to our site and gave me copies of the map into Buffalo. This was the 1st map section of the next ACA map set that I didn’t buy and thought I would just wing it. Which we ended up doing anyway.
Had a good time talking with Colleen until it was time for bed.
Today's ride: 47 miles (76 km)
Total: 239 miles (385 km)
