South Bass Island
Day 18 - Ferry to Island
Sunny
Today we are biking to the ferry terminal at Catawba Island to take the ferry out to South Bass Island. Catawba Island isn't really an island as we rode over a causeway to get there. We have about 10 miles of biking to get there from our campsite at East Harbor State Park.

We caught the 10:30 a.m. ferry and 30 minutes later we landed on South Bass Island.

First stop was the South Bass Island Lighthouse which was open so we were able to climb the tower and also get a stamp.
The South Bass Lighthouse was first lit on July 10, 1897 and was automated in 1962.
Next we rode halfway across the island to the small town of Put In Bay for lunch. Of course being a tourist town the lunch was expensive.
After lunch we rode the short distance to , a National Park site. We visited the visitor center and read the history of the battle of Lake Erie won by Captain Perry. Unfortunately we were unable to climb the monument as they were sandblasting and cleaning it. It won't be open again until next year.
On June 13, 1915, the Perry Memorial Monument was opened to the public.
Lastly we rode to the north end of the island, well because we had nothing better to do...and why not.
We took the 3 p.m. ferry back and then rode back to our camp site and I took a swim.
Spent the evening relaxing at our camp site but did take a short ride around the camp which is huge. Not full but there were many campers here.
Today's ride: 31 miles (50 km)
Total: 732 miles (1,178 km)
