Day 71 West Yellowstone MT to Cameron MT

Today was a short riding day kind of like a moving rest day- but what a gorgeous day!   I had a leisurely morning and left around 9:00. The first 9 miles were mostly through forest then 287 turned west into a beautiful valley that contained Hegben Lake. The surrounding mountains were steep, grassy and forested. Hegben Lake was the site of a major earthquake in 1959 that caused a huge landslide that dammed the Madison River, creating Earthquake Lake. Twenty-eight people died.

Ed SpeareI was 10 going on 11 when thatquake hit. We felt it strongly at our place as ghe ground rolled and the overhead power wires to our house started whipping up and down in a sine wave. There were numerous aftershocks for several days. I ha e experienced se er earthquakes different places, but this was the strongest one I remember.

I think this is where the land slide occurred

Further down the road, the land opens up into a much broader valley. It’s so vast.

I’m arrived at Driftwaters Resort and Campground in Cameron about the same time as Peter. I did Laundry while Peter prepared barbacoa tacos which were delicious. Overall a restful day.

Henry is very enamored with a bulldog across the way named Bella. She’s about a third his height but probably weighs more. Her owners put a Fitbit on her one day and she registered 32 steps. Very chill dog.

Today's ride: 35 miles (56 km)
Total: 2,591 miles (4,170 km)
