Yay! Tailwinds!

Deloraine to Ross

As our expedition cycle touring friend Ian Wallis says, “Give me tailwinds, and I’ll give you kilometres”.

Today was an exceptional and rare riding day. Consistent, strong tailwinds, excellent roads with minimal traffic, regular food stops and mild temperatures. We hit the jackpot! We’ve ridden longer distances in a day on this tour, but none so easily.

So it’s been a productive and fun sunday on the back roads of the Midlands of Tasmania.

A highlight was finding the Ross Village Bakery whose oven dates to 1860s, makes THE WORLD’s BEST Vanilla Slice, and bakes the tastiest Tasmanian scallop pie I’ve ever had. 🙂

And with the top riding conditions we covered a substantial 115km today, with ascents totalling about 830 metres through some very scenic country side.

That’s about 1100 km ridden from Canberra in the 15 days since we departed home.

We are almost at ride end in Hobart. About two days to go.

The day in pics:

Departing Deloraine. About 7am. Daylight Saving ended last night, so it was easier to get up and go this morning.

The farmers have been busy

Even the 11km we rode on the highway was easy enough. Wide shoulder with minimal traffic

Very healthy looking sheep in this region

Topographical wall map in the bakery. Yes it’s a very hilly island. We are located approximately in the middle of the island.

Two of the very friendly Ross Village Bakery staff. By far the best bakery we’ve found on this ride.

It’s true. Their Tassie Scallop Pie is brilliant too.
