Border Run

Deniliquin to Echuca

Another pre-dawn start to head almost directly south toward Victoria. In the first 20+km we saw virtually no vehicles as we followed a RideWithGPS route on a backroad rather than use the Cobb Highway.

The minor road was mostly unsealed and the first section was reasonably good. However the surface soon showed the effects of the recent rains and became too soft to ride easily. We easily detoured by a lane onto the Cobb Highway where we stayed to Moama. About half way, we rested at Mathoura and had a second breakfast at an excellent local cafe.

The final 25 kms of riding were testing,  with a solid headwind and broken road edges, rumble strips and variable road shoulder. Steady traffic required extra concentration and caution, nevertheless we reached Echuca by about 2pm.

After a much needed rehydration in town, we phoned around to find motel accommodation a few blocks south of the river port area.

We have a tentative plan to take another three days to reach the ferry terminal in Geelong via Bendigo and Daylesford.
