A tour of Mackinac Island: What a great fort!
Kim writes:
Today's tour around Mackinac Island was a lot of fun. The fort was especially interesting, as was the butterfly exhibit. No cars are allowed on the island so, needless to say, bicycles are in great abundance. The other wheeled mode of transportation is the horse-drawn carriage. The ferry boat rides to the island and back were great....always love being on the water.

Holy cow! Today, Kim and I returned to civilization with a BANG! First of all, upon departing our campsite, we played tourist at the nearby Castle Rock, which affords a view of the local countryside from 200 feet above the trees. (It also has glitzy statues of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, Babe).
Then we pedaled the short distance down to the city of Saint Ignace and caught the 12:30 Shepler's ferry out to Mackinaw Island. We ate a healthy lunch at Millie's Cafe and then played tourist, visiting the downtown streets, the Butterfly House, and Fort Mackinac.
At the end of the day, we triumphed over an ugly I-75 and the five mile bridge over the Mackinaw Straits by catching the 7:00 Shepler's ferry back to Mackinaw City, which is on the south side of the straits across from Saint Ignace. There, we rewarded ourselves with a Mom-n-Pop motel room because there is an 80% chance of rain tomorrow. After settling in, we walked down to Cunningham's Family Restaurant and both ate the Whitefish dinner special.
Today's ride: 6 miles (10 km)
Total: 729 miles (1,173 km)
