Day 5-The thrill of the trip so far Astoria Bridge: Bay Center Willapa Bay, WA to Warrenton, Oregon across Astoria Bridge
Day 5 - was a fun riding day!! The first twenty or so miles were in rolling hills kissed by rising fog. We rolled right along at a good clip. Around mile 35 we decided to take the Skinville Cutoff Road/alternate 101 which was only .2 mi long but saved 6.1 mi. Allowing us to get to Astoria earlier in the day and get across the bridge before rush hour. Which was a must!
Astoria bridge is 4 miles long with a steep 400ft climb at mile three. The shoulder is now about two feet wide but we could see the old paint which was only @18in!! You are right there with the cars and they do NOT give an inch as it is only two lanes....yes only one lane each direction!! WOW it was a rush.
Then there was a second bridge that was nearly two miles long the shoulder was wider but half of it was full of glass.....my heart is just starting to settle down. We are in the Shilo Inn tonight - it is nearly twice the price we paid in Seattle? What is up with that! I am going to take an Epsom salt bath and let the body re-charge after five road days and three nights on the ground this old girl doesn't need any more excitement today.
