History museum and the castle

We have stayed in this area before and have wanted to visit the Osaka History  museum and the NHK (National Broadcaster) as they are just across the street from our hotel. Visiting NHK was quite underwhelming as there is very little you are allowed to see. Only a small area on the top floor has a few exhibits about their TV  productions and a children’s play area is on the main level. We wandered in but we were asked to leave. However, she did give us stickers to,soften the blow.

This grand area is a welcoming space which is shared by the Osaka History Museum and the NHK.

This is a poster for Chiko Chan’s Interview Show. We love the use of animated characters in Japan.

This exhibit was quite interesting which showed how they make sound effects from simple items. On the left, a basket with dried red beans mimics the sound of waves when shaken and on the right is a fan with small beads attached with thread. It mimics the sound of rain when moved.

Something was lost in translation. We were walking past this bench when the worker asked if we knew what this draped area is. We correctly answered that it is the entrance to a public bath. She insisted Barry sit down so that I could take his picture. Not sure why

Manhole covers can be quite beautiful in Japan. Some times they are quite colourful. We liked this one of Osaka Castle.

The museum begins on the 10th floor. There we were greeted by a partial reconstruction of the Daigokuden of the Nara period, Naniwa Palace. Life size replicas of the vermillion painted pillars surround mannequins in period court dress.

In the 7th century theNaniwa palace was built. Ruins were discovered in 1954. Currently, the centre of the palace remains is a park on the right side of the express way.

This gentleman wanted to help us in any way that he could. He and his friends enjoy speaking English to foreigners.
