The numbers racket
If you read this journal's title page, you'll see that we traveled 3016 kilometers (1873 miles) over 59 days, but that doesn't tell the whole story.
We spent 191 hours total time riding, with an average speed of 15.5kph (9.6mph). We probably also spent a few hours total waiting for traffic lights.
We only rode a significant distance during 46 of those days. 7 days were dedicated to travel and preparations. We took 4 true "zero" days: 2 planned, and 2 due to weather. We took 2 days for ferry travel, where we rode only short distances to and from the terminals. Does that add up to 59 days? Why yes, yes, it does!
Over those 46 days, we rode 2904 kilometers (1804 miles). We climbed a total of 25,926 meters (85,059 feet). That's an average of 63 kilometers (39 miles) per day, and 564 meters (1850 feet) of climbing per day.
Our longest day was 111.8 kilometers (69.5 miles). The most climbing we did in one day was 1375 meters (4511 feet).
We spent 25 nights in hotels, 6 nights in guesthouses, 3 nights in minshuku, 19 nights camping, and 3 nights staying with hosts.
Speaking of spending, total expenses for the trip were $7,889. This includes our little shopping spree at Montbell. I also like to remember that when we travel, some expenses back home are lower or nonexistent: food, heating, electricity, etc. It's not much, but it's something. Not including airfare, we kept our expenses at $50/person per day. That's not too shabby.
Overall, I think the numbers paint a picture of balance. For the most part, we didn't ride too hard, we didn't slack, we didn't overspend. It helps that there were few surprises. A major mechanical failure, an injury, or an extended period of bad weather could have really changed the outcome. I'm grateful for our luck. Perhaps that's something else I should try to quantify?
