Day 24: Himeji to Tonosho: A brief stopover on Shodoshima
From Himeji, we caught the early morning ferry for the northern shore of Shodoshima, leaving Honshu (the main island) for the first time on the tour. Shodoshima is fairly small, quiet, and rural - just right for a one-day visit by bicycle. We cycled down the east side, ate lunch, and then went through the interior over a pass that would prove to be one of the hardest of the tour. For a fairly short day, we were surprised to find by the end that we had climbed 4000 feet. The views from the top were terrific though, to the various ports below and across the water to Shikoku and the smaller islands of the Inland Sea.
