Saying goodbye to "new-found" home

After spending 50 days in this "heaven" of a place, I finally had the opportunity to escape its magical hold when The Midway Journey folks informed me of a training about 130 km away. Fortunately, this was in the general direction I needed to go. So, I packed my bicycle and set out after saying some hard goodbyes to the people who had adopted me and treated me like one of their own.

Saying bye to Jaydev, a Assam Forest guard, a naturalist and a friend.

Luckily, most of the ride was on highways, allowing me to cover miles quickly. I stopped whenever I found hydrating spots, like a sugarcane juice center where I guzzled four cups of freshly crushed juice.

It got hot, and around 1 PM, I stopped for lunch when a motorcyclist stopped me for an “interview.” After hearing my story, the roadside hotel staff prepared fresh rotis for me. I ate, rested, and then hit the road again around 3 PM. I rode until 6 PM, stopping for chai and directions from locals. One thing I’ve learned is never to be afraid of talking to the police or locals—they always guide you right. Most importantly, in Assam, they’ll let you know if there’s a risk of elephant crossings or if you're near an elephant corridor.

This group of people suggested I spend the night at their temple next door. I had more chai and cooked chickpeas while they prepared fresh rotis and subji. After eating, I was led to the temple, where I set my tent, and spent the night.

A great morning, when I found out that the tea stall had fresh milk..

The next morning, I covered the remaining 30 km in under two hours.

I was in the Raimona National Park area, already dreading how my life might get intertwined with the “unknowns” here and how they could delay my travel plans.

Today's ride: 132 km (82 miles)
Total: 2,286 km (1,420 miles)
