The countryside changed today from large flat farmland to small hills with trees and smaller fields.  My route initially went along a Hiway and as is often the case there was a good Service Road alongside.

While I was riding along the Service Road  on the other side of the hiway  a couple of lycra clad Indian cyclists zoomed past on a descent, riding on the smooth hiwy tarmac.  They pulled into a petrol station and I stopped to have a chat but they had no time and set off, both still in top gear.  Which it looked like they stayed in all up the next slope as I respectively kept formation slightly behind them on the service road in a much lower gear.

Progress after the hiway was steady as the roads were sandy and frequently rough so uphills were slow and I had to frequently brake on the downslopes to keep the bike intact. 

Just before Khanapur a fleet of oxen carts loaded with sugar cane came towards me. All traffic stayed clear of them as their path was not straight as the oxen lurched one way and then the other.  Unfortunately my phone had died (overheated) so no photos but I did earlier catch a group of women with handbags perfectly balanced on heads.

Another Rs1000 Lodge tonight.  Tomorrow may be a challenge as I want to ride down through the Tilliri reserve to the coastal plain and some of the route has to be on tracks unless I ride a much longer route on known roads. There is also the little problem of where to stay tomorrow night so it may be a long day.  Bananas and biscuits will be carried!
