Annigeri to Kopal

It turned out that in Annigeri I was staying at a place for Congress politicians and that I should not have the ‘main’ room….the room I was moved to was actually nicer!

My planned departure at 6.30am did not happen as the Lodge Keeper had  padlocked the house doors.  If there had been a fire not sure how I would have got out as all windows were barred. He turned up at 7.30am, and I rode off into a low sun, following a RGPS route to Lakkundi.  It was mainly quiet sandy roads going through small villages with oxen carts and a few scooters but no cars.  In the villages, rubbish is burnt in the streets and leaves little piles of ash, which I tried not to ride over incase of bits of metal or glass.

Do oxen carts carry spare wheels? Very broken wheel lying on ground.

Lakkundi was a bit of a disappointment as there just seemed to be two 10C temples in the town.

The museum looked interesting so there is maybe more to see but there was nowhere to stay in the town so I had to keep moving on.  Kopal was the nearest big town on my route and smaller roads would have been too slow so I rode on the hard shoulder of Hiway NH67.  This was not a problem and with a low traffic density (due to the car and lorry tolls?) India seems to have constructed a network of free to use cycle tracks!  No doubt things will change as more motor vehicles use them but this Hiway felt safer than riding in the towns.  And the smooth surface and shallow gradients let me ride faster (about 15mph on the Hiway vs 10mph max on the smaller, rougher roads).

At Kopal I found a great hotel and the bike and I are now recovering from our 59 mile ride.  I was a little worried as there i s a Festival in the town tomorrow and it will be busy.

Today's ride: 59 miles (95 km)
Total: 94 miles (151 km)
