Lodging - an all motel tour

It has been at least ten years since we have carried a tent. We tend to tour in remote tourist areas with little lodging. This causes us to make our reservations early, to assure we have a room. Our trips are fully booked before we depart.  I try to strike a balance between good reviews, location on route, vicinity to restaurants, and cost. Sometimes we have to stop sooner, or ride further than we would like, to get to lodging. Occasionally there is no restaurant food. This is becoming more common post COVID. I've learned to check  and make sure that there's a restaurant open on the day we are in town. If there's no food available, we carry food with us. The worst case scenario is a can of chili. Jacinto usually has several days of leftovers to choose from. He has never resorted to canned food.

I will add to this list on a daily basis, adding in a short commentary on the room and the lodging reception to bicycles. When I make reservations, I always ask for an early check in, saying that we are cyclists. This gives them an opportunity to state their bicycle policy.

Challis, ID - Village in Motel - Linda is the manager. They have plenty of parking and are allowing us to leave our van for seven weeks with no extra charge. Room 24 was spacious. Coffee/microwave/fridge. Remodeled bathroom. Very clean. It was a good value at $101. Let's not forget the free parking.

Salmon, ID - Stagecoach Inn.  Patio entry room, easy with bikes. Nice size. Fridge/microwave/coffee. Hot breakfast. Firm bed, plenty of pillows and plug ins. It was odd to see paint splatters, and nicked  trim, given the price point. $180.

Gibbonsville, ID - Broken Arrow Cabins. Charmingly decorated, but rustic cabins. You have to use the bathhouse and it is not recommended! Fridge, microwave, wi-fi only at the restaurant. No TV. Very nice people running the place. There's an adjacent restaurant, but it was closed. They didn't answer their phone all winter. I contacted them through Facebook.$85. for two people.

Wisdom, MT -Nec Perce Motel. Updated and tidy. Laminate flooring. Fridge/microwave. Jacinto spent a lot of time grumbling about the TV and resetting it. IDK what all he did, but he was happy in the end. Good value. $89.

Anaconda, MT - Marcus Daly Motel - spacious, sparkling clean. Fridge/microwave. $135. a night. Faye has owned it since 1985 and has all of the answers to your questions. Some that you didn't even know you had! Good space to hang out in for a layover.

Drummond, MT Drummon Motel. Spacious room. Fridge/microwave. Updated bathroom, except I couldn’t get the shower to fully come on. Possible operator error. Good WiFi. Fine value for the $$. The town itself is depressed and scary, to me. I sure wouldn’t spend a day off here. $80.

Ovando, MT - Ovando Inn. The two bedroom rooms are downstairs, one bedrooms are upstairs. Full kitchen and living room use. No private fridge, etc. spacious, updated room. Attached store for your convenience! Office closes at 5, be here before to check in. $162. For a double.

Seeley Lake, MT - after much debate, I settled on the Basecamp Bar. We've stayed in a couple of over the bar rooms and they've been of last resort. Happily, this was not one of those cases. The rooms were in a separate building. We put our bikes inside of the spacious entry, the room itself was too small for bicycles. No TV, no wall art. Yes, fridge/microwave/Kuerig. Firm bed, good pillows. Very clean. $168. prepaid. Tyrel Taylor is the man to talk to. The workers answering the phone only do reservations if you are coming in the same night.

Swan Lake, MT - Laughing Horse B&B. Room 2 is a spacious 'kitchenette', which means it has a fridge/microwave. Internet is much improved from our last visit here. The included breakfast was excellent - including  fresh oatmeal cookies to go!  $149.

Hungry Horse, MT - Beargrass Resort and RV Park - #1 two bedroom duplex with a full kitchen. New construction. Fresh and clean. Three TV's! Good internet. We tried to figure out how to come back here for our day off. This was an excellent value, compared to other places we've stayed this trip. $178.

Lake McDonald, MT - Motel Lake McDonald - not to be mistaken for the lodge (at twice the price). We are staying here to be as far as possible up the  Going to the Sun Road climb.  The purpose of our stay here was accomplished, and worth it, despite the price. The beds were firm, the pillows and towels fluffyi liked the quality and scent of their bathroom products. The bathroom and especially the shower, was microscopic. We could hear our neighbors talking through the thin walls. The room was dated and small. Our front door in #8 opened/closed only with great force and shook the entire building when used. Location, location. I’d stay here again, despite the draw backs. But I would look again at the lodge. It did have soon dormer rooms that were less expensive. They disappeared before I decided to book. $250. before tax.

Pinnacle/Essex, MT - Glacier Haven Inn - old, reasonably updated. There's a sign in the bathroom not to tap your razor on the sink or tub. ??? Fridge/microwave/TV. About half again as large as our tiny room last night. Beds are a little soft. $220. a night, charged at the time of booking. Restaurant next door, not open daily.

East Glacier, MT - Mountain Pine Motel. Nice sized room. Table and chairs. Fridge/microwave. Older place, remodeled bathroom. Good shower pressure. Good WiFi.  I’d be fine with a day off here. $180.

Bear Mountain Motel. Well located. Very helpful office staff. Cheapest place in town. Fridge in room, microwave by office. TV. Good beds. Fluffy pillows and towels. Super small bathroom. I have to sit at an angle to use the commode. Sorry if TMI. very small tin shower from the 50’s. Clean. Room enough for our bikes. We would stay here again, just be warned about the microscopic bathroom. $425. CAD two nights.

Pincher Creek, AB - Stardust Inn and Chalets - Dee is the do it all woman. She was changing out a toilet and cleaning rooms when I arrived. She is quite the whirlwind. Our room is the best price we've paid for awhile. $103. USD fridge/microwave/Kuerig. A real size TV, not just a computer monitor. Color coordinated towels and paint colors. It's almost like staying at home. The odd thing I appreciate is the big rug next to the bed. It is clean and barefoot worthy. Smallish room, but feels fine without the bikes, which are locked in the commercial laundry room. I have the code to get inside whenever I want.

Sparwood, BC - Causeway Bay Motel - perfectly located next to the big dump truck, the grocery, and Subway. Also, the train tracks. They provide ear plugs! This isn't our first lodging next to the train track, unfortunately. Large room. upholstered chair to sit in. Laminate flooring. Fridge/microwave/TV/Kuerig. Good restaurant on site. Good stay and would stay here again. $133. USD

Jaffray, BC - airbnb tiny home in the woods. $225. USD This was the most charming little place ever! It had everything we needed, but was small, and compact. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

Cranbrook, BC - Day's Inn. They had a big fancy entry. Look at me, thinking Day's Inn is fancy. We got in two hours early. I was very happy until I got in the room, and someone was literally right outside of our room, sandblasting. The room was very dusty, with dust in the air, and coating all of the furniture. I was so happy to get in the room, I ignored the dust. I had showered and everything when Jacinto got in. He wasn't happy at all and went down to the office. They said they couldn't give us another room, and they would send someone to dust later. I dusted myself. So - it would have been a great room otherwise. TV/fridge/microwave/breakfast included. $153. CAD

Yahk, BC - Yahk Motel. Two queen room.  #7. It had a hot plate, and a minimal amount of pots and pans. Fridge/microwave/coffee. TV didn't work, even after Jacinto called the office. Very basic. It's the sort of place you are happy it's there, but don't need to come back again. $103. CAD.

Kuskonook, BC - airbnb - Sanca Motel Lodge - $123. USD. My opinion about a place can be greatly swayed by good internet and an early check in. We have both of those here. I have never sat down on a noisier bed, forget rolling over or anything more exciting! There were two thin pillows. The living room area was nice. Jacinto liked the TV. The internet was good. We had a full kitchen to use. The best part was they let us stay until 1 PM, avoiding the rain. Nice people.

Crawford Bay, BC - Kokanee Chalet and RV Park  CAD $155. room #23 (one night stay possible). Great room. I didn't have to talk myself into liking it. The very best part was the king size bed, a real rarity this trip. Very friendly ladies in the office. Great stay.

Nelson, BC - Alpine Inn & Suites. CAD$205. including tax. The office man was very impressed I could bicycle all the way from CB today. Everyone likes having their ego stroked. Great room. Fluffy towels, and pillows. One bed only. I can't quite remember if we had to stay on the second floor if we wanted two beds, or if it was only one bed with a kitchenette. Room #11. We are up the hill, away from the food. That is a very bad choice when you are a hungry cyclist. It's a good choice for a get away in the morning. We've already done the big climb. Laundry on site.

Salmo, BC - SalCrest Motel. $160. CAD Room #2 two bedrooms. You can tell this is a privately owned and lovingly cared for motel. Everything is like visiting your favorite aunt, from the artwork to the tidy rooms. Definitely worth a stay. Unfortunately, the steak house next door is now closed and we had to go into town for dinner. Fridge/Microwave/coffee pot. 10 AM check out, to Jacinto's dismay.

Ione, WA - Porter Plaza Motel $126. Room #1 All new inside, although the building is older. Fridge/microwave/coffee pot. Large TV. Dismal wi-fi. This is better located for food than the Riverside we stayed at last time.  Would stay here again. Laundry in the same building.

Newport, WA Antler Motel Room #5 $120.66 two beds, one in a separate room. Spacious. Old but serviceable motel. Wi-fi was miserable. One bed was newer, the other one was very tired. We've stayed here three times now. It's not a bad place, but it won't be your favorite. Nice people running the motel.

Coeur d'Alene, ID - Budget Saver Motel - two nights - $219. before tax. The name put me off, but it was a great little place. Large room. Good wifi- continental breakfast. Several restaurants very close. We had a day off here and were perfectly happy.  Good location for exiting the city. Bike path only blocks away. Excellent bike shop, Vertical Earth, two blocks away. I'd stay here again. Great value.

Harrison, ID - Osprey Inn - $226. king room - Blue Heron. Nice room. Bikes in garage. Well cared for B&B. Breakfast wasn't until 9 AM - scrambled eggs with ham and  a baked french toast dish. It wasn't as good as I wanted it to be for the 9 AM serving time. No fridge/microwave in room, but they were available in the common area.

Santa, ID - airbnb - camper in the woods. 1.5 miles down two dirt roads. I'm sure this is the most unique stay of our trip. Outdoor shower, composting toilet. Best part was having them cook for us and deliver the food. Amazing food - huge, huge servings. Well worth the adventure, Jacinto says. But we agree the cramped bed would keep us from coming back. They are building a cabin back in the trees. Perhaps that would be more spacious. Wonderful hosts.

Deary, ID - airbnb - two story white house on Idaho street. I'm sure this is our best value of the trip. $200. for four bedrooms/four bathrooms. Immaculate, well decorated. It's too bad we didn't have a day off there. Washer/dryer! Ice cream bars in the freezer. What more could you want? Good wi-fi.

Orofino, ID - White Pine Motel - $106. double queen room. Spacious. Good wi-fi. Great value. Firm beds. Squishy pillows. Fridge/microwave. Nice enough for a day off - great price.

Harpster, ID - Harpster RV Park - yurt $56.  microwave/fridge. Fans were provided after I asked. We spent the majority of the day in the 'lounge' - which is a fancy word for wide hallway with seating. There's a TV, but they don't know where the clicker is. We stopped here because I thought the elevation gain to Grangeville would be too much - it turns out RWGPS was not accurate. I would suggest continuing on - although the people here were nice and accommodating with us.

White Bird, ID - White Bird Motel - $85. Cash. Barb. Spic and span room. Plenty of space for the bikes. Brand new bathroom. Fridge/microwave/kuerig. Layover worthy. Too many pillows for Jacinto. He didn’t know where to put them all.

Riggins, ID - Swiftwater Cabins - right across from the grocery. Location, location! $124. Night. Not as nice looking on the outside,  it completely remodeled inside. Full kitchen. New bathroom. Large TV. Great value.

New Meadows, ID - Heartland Motel $154. king room. Large TV. Good wi-fi.Fridge/microwave/Kuerig. roomy. Carpet, which we don't see much now. New bathroom. It's fine. No complaints. But I wonder what the motel across the street looks like for half the price.

Cascade, ID - Cascade Lake Inn. Cute decorations. King bed. Fridge, micro, Kuerig, good WiFi, big TV. Ice in office. Next to convenience store. $152.

Crouch, ID - Three Bears Inn - king suite. Oh La La! We are living the life. Two large TV’s. All of the amenities. Next to grocery store. Very comfy couch. Decorated to the hilt in bear motif. $142. We are finishing the trip strong with above average lodging.

Sourdough, ID - Sourdough Lodge. this is a wide spot in the road, as far up the climb as we could ride and still get a bed. That was very important. We had a single queen room, which was quite small and did not have AC. They did provide a small fan. I would suggest renting #1 - which had AC and probably more than one bed.  It was an acceptable room. $129. No real complaints, but it wasn't my favorite.  But, the location was very important.

Stanley, ID - Mountain Village Resort - standard rooms don't have AC (or fans). Deluxe rooms do. The room is large enough for the bikes and walking around. Bathroom is nice. It was a long evening until the sun went down and we could open the window for some (smoky) air. No fans were available at the office. $132. The restaurant next door was my favorite of the trip.

Challis, ID - back at the Village Inn where they let us leave our van for free.
