Stop At A Roadsign

Sleeping where it's grassy isn't possible everywhere, especially if you go inland. Here's my first campsite on the moors to the east of Reykjavik.

On the way to Gullfoss at the beginning of the Kjolur Route, I stopped at a road sign to photograph myself by a sign when a car stopped and an old man got out. He walked over to me saying "Do you know where you are standing" "No" I replied. "Your standing right on the epicentre of the earthquake which happened last month."

I had seen the earthquake on the evening NRK 1 (Norsk Riks Kringcasting)  television news a month ago that had caused a lot of damage, but because it was on the 17th of June, Iceland's National Day at 3 o clock in the afternoon, everybody was outdoors celebrating so nobody was injured.

The man pointed to a house a hundred metres off and continued "That house over there the ground opened  underneath it."

Sure enough there was a large open crater in the road.

That was the first day which finished at Gullfoss. I was camping a little north of the waterfall at the start of the Kjolur Route.
