Past The Midway Point

Towards the midway point of the Kjolur with Hofsjokull glacier beyond the black hill in the centre.

The fog lifted at about 9,  leaving a fairly nice morning, albeit cloudy with temperatures of around 9 or 10 degrees. Onwards from Hveravellir the midway point across the Kjolur, the surroundings are extremely pleasant upland sheep pasture with lots of good camping possibilities. Though, yesterday evening in the fog it was difficult to see much beyond the track. The track now could be called a road inasmuch as it is well compressed smooth gravel making it easy to cycle along at a fast pace.  I looked in a mirror at the huts this morning and my face is black with all the dust that passing vehicles whip up and remains airborne and also the back of my neck is badly sunburned. I stop for an early lunch at 12 of porridge, chocolate and tea in the lea of a large boulder just before reaching a large lake called Blondulon.  At this point its 44 km down to the valley at the end of the route.  In the evening on reaching the valley it became extremely overcast and cold. Later the fog rolled in, again.

So, after two days, I have completed the Kjolur Route: the easy route across Iceland. I found it fairly straightforward and easy-going. I am thinking over another route back across the island, from north to southwest. Whether to go by the Sprengisandur, which is another route across the middle. But going to Askja in the eastern highlands remains a gold. It is on the East Route. Anyway, my plan at the moment is to travel around the northeast of Iceland around the coast to the Eastern Fjords and perhaps, set off for Askja from there. At the moment from Blondudalur where I've come down to from the Kjolur, I will cycle east on the Ring Road to Akureyri, where I'll be buying food for many days at the supermarket. As always people seem to be amazed that I have cycled so far, as in the next log day.
