Hard Climbing Days

A remote farm at Modrudalur 70km inland from the coastal village Vopnafjordur in the northeast.

The roads in the coastal fjords of the island's northeast are the hilliest. On Tuesday the 1st August I had a climb similar to what I would expect in the French Alps. It was extremely warm with temperatures well into the mid twenties. I started at Bakkefoi leaving Gunnergolfell behind me and crossed over to Vopnafjordur. Onwards in the afternoon, I had a long steep climb, which must have taken 2 hours to reach the top. It seemed to go on and on. No sooner had I got to where I thought was the top, only to turn a corner and see 2 or 3 more hairpin bends and the road on terraces above me. Eventually, seeing on the other side a wide estuary of two large rivers with the Dyrfell mountains beyond.
