They were on horses. We are on bicycles

Day 1 The Explorers’ Ride

Albury to Yackandandah

82 km   736 metre

We are underway on the approximate retrace of the route followed by Hume & Hovell in 1824. They were on horses. Thankfully we are on bikes.

It was an almost perfect day of cycle touring. Excellent weather. Excellent route. Excellent company. Interesting sights.

The ride began with a lovely send off from downtown Albury by historian Peter Harper and his colleagues who have done a tremendous amount of work to develop this route. They’ve even gone to the trouble of producing a banner, brochures, tickets and other material to publicise the ride.

We’ve finished the day in the picturesque town of Yackandandah where we’d booked a cabin in the campground. Dinner at the Star Hotel.

Today’s slightly meandering route. We did a few side trips to spot Hume & Hovell monuments
