Sourbrodt - Gerolstein

There was no sunny start this morning, just heavy cloud, dankness, the threat of rain.
From Bütgenbach, our way out of town was through a car park, near the lake, an unpromising looking route, but we emerged through some bushes onto a wide gravel track, which turned out to be a rail-trail, about which I knew nothing. I had researched the Kyll valley Radweg online, that's what we were aiming for. We stuck with the gravel track, it was taking us in the right direction. A few kilometres ahead, still in Belgium, the gravel turned to brand new blacktop; Christmas come early. The shiny new asphalt continued right into Germany. There were stretches of brand new timber fence/crash barrier. Near Hallschlag, we stopped at a brand new picnic table for a lunch break. The blacktop ran out just beyond the Kronenburger See. The final stretch connecting with the Kyll valley was not yet ready, so we took to the road.
In Stadtkyll, we stopped for another short break, a drink and a cereal bar. Now we could follow the uploaded route on the GPS. The Kylltalradweg was not too hard to follow, signed, though we had a few glitches. There's a lot of field path, some riding through light industrial estates, some roadside path, some back roads and one sharp descent into Lammersdorf. Overall a pretty ride, it would have been more so in sunshine We called it a day before 5 pm in Gerolstein. I accidentally turned off Herr Garmin's timer in Stadtkyll, so our tcx file is missing a stretch.
Another hotel room picnic this evening, washed down with some local red wine, Spätburgunder Pfalz Trocken, a bit thin, but at €1.95 a bottle, who's to complain.
Today's ride: 72 km (45 miles)
Total: 434 km (270 miles)
