Nearly to Passau
Wind!!!
Staying at an Ibis Hotel is rather like putting on comfortable old clothes. In no way at all can it be describes as glamourise but when you arrive as we did yesterday it feels so comfortable. You can be sure that bike storage will be easy, that there is a roomy lift that will easily take all your panniers and other bits and pieces, the shower will be hot and easily accessed, the bed will be comfortable, the wifi will work and you can get ordinary food with no fuss. Just what we needed last night
We had tossed up what to do last night. It all rather depended on the weather - if it was fine we could do a long day on what we knew would be very easy going and then have a very short trip left to Passau so we would get there in plenty of time to go to the Organ Concert at noon - we have had some bad experiences with it in the past. Well no rain was forecast soleats go for it. What I had neglected to look at however was the wind, there was to be a roaring westerly, just the direction we were going and that is what we got.
KEN WRITES
Going into the centre of Linz was easy as long as we avoided the trams coming from the rear

Over the bridge, down the ramp and we were back on the track. We had to share with cars for a time and then it was separate beside a busy road and a railway line. Then a wiggle into Ottenshein and the ferry. It was very cold on the ferry but the route after it was in much better shape than we remembered
Then on to the Treppleweg and very bad head wind. At 20km we came to a Backerie and had a coffee, pastry and a warm up. We met a couple from Paris cycling and camping on the EV6 with a very young child, one had a 'bob' trailer and the other a child trailer - they were going down wind
A few minutes latter we came to the great little bike shop where many years I got a new bike stand. My stand keeps coming loose and I have stripped one screw. He put on a new stand and replaced my rear brake pads all with good humour and the total cost of 40E

From there into the gorge for about 40km - forests on both sides and large numbers of touring cyclists coming the other way many in organised groups. At about 1pm we came to the place where the little ferry takes you to the other side but before that we stopped for soup and coffee and a warmup.
Once on the north side it was past apple and pear trees. people were picking them up by the barrow load. Not having proper maps was a bit of a problem because we couldnt tell where we were for long periods.
We cane to two early Styre tractors one a fifties single cylinder model at use in a factory the second a lovely sixties 2 cylinder model. When I went in they showed me a shed fill of early Puch mopeds and scooters
From there to here it was a slog into strong wind sometimes mixing it with traffic on the road. The sight of the hotel by the road was great and the man made us welcome - it was then 4pm.
Today's ride: 88 km (55 miles)
Total: 1,888 km (1,172 miles)
