Comstock Park to Greenville
Easy riding
We rode out earlier than usual, knowing that the day would be getting hot. But since we didn’t have that far to ride, we did plenty of stopping along a route that combined trails and country roads, my favorite kind of ride.

As we started down the trail, we saw a series of colorful bird houses. We guessed they were made by a shop class or maybe Boy or Girl Scouts, but we never saw a sign giving credit where credit was due.
We rode through about a mile of apple orchards which must have been beautiful a few weeks ago when all the trees were blossoming. With straight lines of trees so close together and obviously pruned, it looked almost like vineyards. I assume that facilitates picking, but I don’t know if it is manually or mechanically.
Oops. We did see a detour sign when we started on this segment of trail, but we were very close to our destination, so we knew we could investigate without fear of a long detour.
We are staying in an old hotel downtown in the small city of Greenville, pop. 8500, in Central Michigan. The Main Street has a number of second hand shops as well as vacant stores, but it also has these nicely restored facades.
This 800 lb. Bell served as the city’s fire alarm until 1941. When an electric siren was installed, the city presented the outgoing mayor with the bell. Wasn’t he lucky? I only got a clock.
Nothing like a little ice cream on a hot day. This flavor was called Michigan pothole, so it seemed like I should try it. I ordered small serving, which I couldn’t finish. I must be slowing down in my old age.
Today's ride: 32 miles (51 km)
Total: 452 miles (727 km)
