Second Day of Riding

Our second day, leaving Alpine at 7:30 a.m. and biking 52 miles to Jacumba, has been supposedly our toughest of the entire trip, with 5,000 feet of uphills (as much as 16% grade) and 4,000 feet of downhills, for a net elevation gain of 1,000 feet. Near Interstate 8 (and even on the shoulder of I-8 for 3 miles). For warmth in the morning, I'm wearing "Kneekers" (a gift from my friend Chuck) because they are easily removed when the temperatures rise.
Gene and Rosalyn, riding a tandem, broke a chain and their bike fell onto Rosalyn. She tore her hamstring and went to urgent care. Timberline loaned Gene a standard bike for him to continue on his own and will transport Rosalyn and the unused tandem the rest of the way (or at least to Tucson, where the medical care will be better).
Today's ride: 52 miles (84 km)
Total: 88 miles (142 km)
