Pancho Villa & Columbus NM

Pancho Villa was a bandit who became a Mexican army general and political figure supported by the U.S. in 1914. When the U.S. switched its support to his rival in 1915, Pancho Villa and some of his army raided Columbus NM on March 9, 1916 (the last time attacking foreign troops were on U.S. soil, I'm told), in an attempt to goad the U.S. into attacking Mexico. The Mexican government permitted the U.S. to send a major contingent of troops into Mexico to capture Pancho Villa. Using aircraft and trucks for the first time in its history, the U.S. army pursued him for a year, but never caught him.
