On our layover day, about half of us chose to go to Mexico for lunch. We were shuttled 4 miles to this border crossing at Palomas Mexico.  Then we walked across to the Pink Store, which caters to tourists. No passport needed in either direction. I used my Global Entry card to prove U.S. citizenship upon return.
