Cathy is 58 and on a 1-year sabbatical from her administrative position at Miami University (Ohio). For many years, before taking the administrative position, she was a professor of computer science at that school. 

She and her husband of 34 years (a 3rd-grade teacher) live in Northern Cincinnati.  They have 2 daughters (1 getting her doctorate in occupational therapy and 1 a nurse). She and her husband go on many adventures with another couple, who came up with the idea of this cross-country ride.  The other couple plans to do the ride next year. For a couple of reasons, Cathy didn't want to wait until next year. Her husband has no interest in doing a cross-country ride.
