12th Day of Riding
With more beautiful sunny weather, we rode 54 miles today to Rodeo NM, with a road-side stop for lunch at a memorial (pictured below) to the surrender of Geronimo and his band of fighters to the U.S. army. The actual surrender took place in 1886 in a canyon about 8 miles from here. Geronimo died in 1909 at age 79, after years of imprisonment at Ft Sill in OK. He was exhibited at an "Apache Village" in the midway of the Worlds Fair in 1904. He also rode a horse in Teddy Roosevelt's inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue in 1905.
