That was then
The Rhone-Alpes won't be entirely new territory for us. On our first cycling tour of Europe in 1993 we completed a large loop that began and ended in Paris. We cut through Switzerland and over the Alps into Northen Italy - not the same specific mountains as we'll be riding through this time, but at least the same major range and general severity. On the way back to Paris from Italy we cut a diagonal across northern Provence and along the magnificent Gorges du Verdon, which will be a highlight of this year's loop as well.
If we could make it through the Alps then, surely we can do it again this time. After all, we're so much more experienced now. How much can it really matter that we're 22 years older this time, or that we'll face a new pass nearly every day rather than just a few overall?
