A last look back: Some random thoughts on the tour of a lifetime
Just to wrap things up, here is a brain dump of thoughts and facts about this trip, which we both think is the best tour we've ever taken. Looking back on it neither one of us can think of anything consequential that we would change. First, a few key stats:
30 days on the road: 28 cycling, one hiking, and one actual rest day
1254 miles cycled
128,000 feet of elevation gain
34 named passes and summits (more than 1/day on average)
20 miles riding in the rain
5 days where we arrived dry at our hotel, and the rains started within about 15 minutes
0 flats or other equipment malfunctions
2 damaged pair of eyeglasses
0 adverse dog encounters
0 adverse health issues
4 permanently lost articles (all Rachael's, for a nice change): a blouse, a sports bra(!), bicycle gloves, bandana
1 lost, then thankfully found article: Rachael's money/ID pouch.
Here are a couple of action shots - we decided to invest in the local economy and spring for a few photos by the photographers trolling at the summit of the most famous climbs.
