Crest to Nyons
Starting early is key!
We set an alarm for 5:00 a.m. and duly got up, packed up, and ate our granola and yogurt sitting on a plastic couch by the campground playground. On the road at 6:38 (why this sticks in my mind I don't know).
It was a pleasant ride along D 538 to Saou, made even better because we had no difficulty finding it on leaving Crest!

We carried on through Bourdeaux and onto our old friend D 70 which we followed through Crupies and over Col de la Sausse. Then down through the Défile de Trente Pas and a turn onto the D 94 to Nyons.

We had considered making this a shorter day if it got too hot (forecast high was 37 or 38) but Bordeaux (which we liked) was too soon and St-Ferréol-Trente-Pas didn't appeal. As it turned out, we arrived in Nyons around 11, ate our sandwiches in a shady square, and still made it to the campground check-in by noon. I was worried it would close at noon, but this one was open until 12:30.
Nyons seemed like it would be interesting, but due to the heat we spent the afternoon lazing by the pool. We swam, relaxed in the shade, and swam again when we needed to cool off, about every half-hour. However, we were the odd ones; almost everyone else there was lying in the sun like it wasn't broiling hot!
We returned to the shady square for an okay dinner (entrecôte, frites, salad). The restaurants along the main pedestrian street looked like they had better fare, but the narrow street lined with old stone buildings was still radiating heat.
64 km, ascent 704 m, descent 639 m
Today's ride: 64 km (40 miles)
Total: 644 km (400 miles)
