Tbilisi - Ushguli, (8/X); 25th August
25th August
Shortly after leaving Tsageri a pick up truck slowed down next to us and asked if we wanted a lift. We declined without hesitation, but it was the first time in Georgia we’ve been offered one.
At the town of Lentekhi I got some snacks, a loaf of sweet bread, two loaves of stale bread and yoghurt. There were many stray dogs lounging around. As we were leaving, two of them started following us. One of them gave up after about 2 km, but the other one persisted. We tried to chase her away, by spraying water at her, shouting, and waving a big stick at her, but none were effective. She was a sweet dog and just wanted to hang out, but again, it’s not really fair to take her so far from the town that she’s familiar.

After about 10km, she was still with us. At a bus stop, we asked a waiting passenger to put the dog in the stop and keep the gate, about waist height, closed. We then tempted the dog in with some bread.
As we rolled away, the dog reappeared. She had jumped over the gate and was running after us. This time joined by another dog which has been cooling down in a stream.
At the 13 km mark we had a puncture so stopped to fix it and have some lunch. Both dogs had followed us so we gave them bread. We named the second dog dumbo as he seemed quite clumsy.
The first dog was clearly very tired, her eyes were bright red. When a group of cows passed us, she barked them away. We had stopped on a downhill section, and as we rolled away again, she couldn’t keep up and slowed, but still trying to chase. It felt gut wrenching doing this to her when she just wanted to hang out, but taking a dog along with us isn't really a realistic option.
That was the last we saw of her. It was heavy rain overnight. Hope she found some shelter and some company.
