Prizren to Peja; 17th October

17th October

After a breakfast of porridge with chia seeds and flax seeds sprinkled on top, we left Prizren.

The town is located at the foothills of Sharr National Park, and we spent the day cycling across the flat to Peja, at the foothills of the dramatically named ‘Accursed Mountains’.

The roads were generally very quiet and went through small villages, avoiding the busier road. There were some houses going up which looked very smart. Just looking at the infrastructure (high quality roads, high speed internet where we have stayed) and the cars driving around (a fair few high end SUVs), you would be hard pressed to think that 34% of Kosovoans live on less than $7/ day.

At a village about 15km from Peja, we stopped at a bakery. I had what looked like a cake but was actually several layers of slightly sweet pancakes, and MayLyn had some sausage rolls. The young guy behind the counter insisted we take two energy drinks with us. I don’t like energy drinks so asked if I could swap with a juice which he was happy to.

The final section into Peja went past what I assume is a large NATO base as the flag was flying outside it. We went past at going home time, having to wiggle around the ‘dragon’s teeth’ roadblocks which had been placed outside it.

The hostel was very good. Very clean, fairly new and a relaxed vibe. Many snow sports equipment hung on the walls, for the people who visit in the winter to rent.

Walking into town we passed a large black dog. I said hello and he bounded up to me, shoving his large body against mine, trying to get me to stop in a playful way. It was quite funny and very cute. On the others slide of the bridge, after several manoeuvres past him, he lost interest and walked away.
