Peja to Sarajevo via Bijelo Polje, 2/X; 19th October
Unfortunately, I lost my notes for our time in Montenegro. Like Kosovo and North Macedonia, we enjoyed autumn colours, some hills, an abandoned puppy and an invitation for coffee and rakija on the side of a small track. Food was good, with decent restaurants in small towns.
As you can see from the sign, this is a 'panoramic road' -- but it was busy with cars, some of which were going quite fast. Not particularly enjoyable if you are on a bicycle
Cycling along the valley, looking at the map, we noticed a much smaller road going along the west side of the river, also leading to the destination of the day, Bijelo Polje, but not on the Panoramic Road. Although the traffic on the Panoramic Road had quietened down, the smaller road was appealing, so we diverted there.
As we made our way up a small hill, a man in his 60's waved us over from the outside of his house, grapes in hand. We stopped, he handed us the grapes, and then invited us to sit down with him. He promptly handed us some rakia. His cousin then turned up and we tried to make conversation, showing them some pictures of our trip. After a few shots, he made some Turkish coffee, indicating it would counteract the effect of the alcohol.
The guy put suggested we stay a bit longer, but we decided to continue cycling -- before departing, he gave us a huge bag of apples from his tree -- they were very tasty -- juicy, too. V
