Osh to Uzgen, 18th July

18th July

Was hard to leave Osh. We had a very comfortable time there and got into a routine of coffee, pasties, sometimes pizza, and a cinema next to the hostel whilst we waited for the DHL parcel.

The road out of Osh was built up and not particularly interesting.
Staying at a town called Uzgen.

Stopped at a road side restaurant for lunch, leaving Osh. There had been a few tandoor ovens in homestays in Tajikistan, but I hadn't seen one in a restautant since Uzbekistan. The filling is beef and onion, served piping hot, crispy outside. Delicious.

Walked to the restored minaret and mausoleum before finding some food to eat.

They have a supermarket chain called Globus in Kyrgystan — there was one in Osh and there’s one here too. It’s a bit expensive but has delicious milkshake in a carton as well as chocolate, pastries etc.

On the walk back from the restaurant passed a small park which commemorated some of the various battles the Soviet Union took place in in the 20th Century — WW2; Afghanistan and interestingly the Balkan war too, from the late 90’s.

I couldn't figure out what this is a memorial to. БАТКЕН refers to the region east of Osh where Uzgen sits.

Monument commemorating 50 years since the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. This one has been left unmaintained.

Looked at the map to figure out a route to Almaty. The M42 is now a major road with the traffic to boot. We are looking at cutting across a pass and heading towards Naryn in the east which should offer quieter roads.
