Mestia - Kutaisi, 5/X; 3rd September
3rd September
After a resfreshing morning dip in the river we continued towards Kutaisi.
The weather was warm and very humid, which meant very quickly I was soaked in sweat. Fortunately most villages have a public fountain for drinking and soaking some clothes e.g my bandana for cooling down.

Despite cycling at a low elevation, there were still rolling hills, making the route slightly more challenging than if it were pancake flat. We met two other cyclists — Max from Australia who finishes his two year trip in December, and Teo from Germany who finished his uni studies three months ago and is cycling east with no particular destination in mind.
Teo recommended a sulphur bath which was a bit of a diversion to Kutaisi, but as I can’t turn down a hot spring we decided to head that way.

The bath was a bit disappointing — the water is coming out the ground is far too hot to bath in — but it flows down to the river, where it had formed a 3-4 metre wall of dried minerals — you can sit underneath this, having the very hot water drip on you, or enjoy the steam coming off the ground where the water has landed, but it was still too hot to be comfortable.
We headed back 3 kms from the way we came to find a nice camp spot by the river. There were a few other day campers there as well as a guy spear fishing in the river — he he caught one fish about 6 inches in length.
There was also one guy who drove down the track paralleling the river a few times, with a song playing ‘gamajoba, gamajoba, gamajoba’ at a very fast rhythm to 90s euro techno. It was an incredibly catchy song, and I’ve tried since to find it on YouTube without success.
The river was very clear and had one section where it formed a deep pool which you could dive into from the bank.
