Kutaisi; 5th September
5th September
Went to the market in Kutaisi which is lovely. Similar to the Green Market in Almaty, several large areas selling different things — one hall for meat and dairy, another for vegetables and alleyways selling hardware and household goods.

We bought an anti-mosquito incense coil, but didn’t find luck looking for thread lock.
In the afternoon I went to a stall selling cooked food and enjoyed a couple of beers.
In the evening we joined a walking tour of Kutaisi. The tour guide was an air traffic controller as his main job, but also did tours on the side. He’d had a night shift the night before so was clearly a bit tired!
The tour was enjoyable — took us round the centre of Kutaisi pointing out how there used to be a cathedral in the centre, which was demolished to make way for a statue of Lenin (religion not being tolerated by the authorities in the Soviet Union), which was demolished to make way for a fountain depicting a story from Georgia’s founding mythology after 1991. Where there was a statue of Stalin, there is now a McDonalds with free WiFi and toilets.
