Khorog to Langar, (4/X); 27th June

27th June

The shade from the trees provided some welcome respite from the morning sun, which rises at around 5am.

As we were leaving a farmer came through with his cow — going to take her to a grazing spot for the day.

The tarmac was pretty smooth for the first 30km. Much much better than the road down from KhalaiKhumb to Khorog which could be used a a torture method if made to cycle through it on tyres pumped up hard.
We are now fully in the Wakhan Valley. The valley is very wide, with the mountains on both the Afghan and Tajik side looking a rather barren and desolate. There are snow capped peaks in the distance which may well be Peak Marxs and Peak Engels, towering mightily above.

Towards the end of the day another cyclist caught up with us as we were having plums on the side of the road. He was Henry, living in Norway and on a four week cycle of the Pamir’s.

We cycled the rest of the 10km together, until finding a camp spot — when Henry asked if we could camp, the man said yes, and him and his son helped push our bikes up the hill to the spot.
It’s about 25 m from the family’s house, overlooking the valley. The mother and son even brought out freshly baked bread and deep fried chunks of bread — delicious. In return we gave some fancy chocolate MayLyn had picked up from Khorog.
