Grateful for spectacular days riding our bikes, for idyllic nights in our tent and for wondrous nights in a chateau with a soft bed!

Today was a short ride so we had a leisurely breakfast at our pleasant riverside camping spot leaving Cofolens at 10:30 am.

After a great supper last night, a good sleep and a full breakfast, the hills seemed quite do-able this morning.  Perhaps we were flying along because we were anticipating our comfortable accommodations tonight.  As the forecast was calling for two days of rain, we wanted to be indoors and booked into the Chateau de la Redortière.  We stopped for lunch in Massignac just 4 kms before the chateau, arriving soon after at 3pm.

Our host, Natalie greeted us and showed us to our room. We quickly showered and then fell asleep in the heavenly Queen size bed.  Refreshed we wrote the blog, uploaded pictures, moved in to the "Madame" room and waited for  dinner at 7:30.  What a delectable meal, all with items produced on their farm: starting with a vegetable tart, then chicken in herb sauce for Steve, an omelette for Ann, scalloped potatoes, followed by a cheese plate with salad and for dessert an apple strudel.  The local, Charentes wine, the 2016 Guimps Les Boudreaux, was rather rougher and cheaper than it sounds, but a fine accompaniment.  We were alone in the dining room, the double doors were wide open letting the warm winds float in as we watched the sunset over the hills in the distance. All of it was utterly charming. Will we ever go back to camping?

Jacquie GaudetJust found your journal today and am binge-reading it.

We hit on a nice balance by camping but eating out. Campgrounds in France, especially the municipal ones, are close to town so this is feasible (unlike here in BC, where campgrounds are usually well away from any services).

I still do this if travelling solo, but Al prefers not to camp anymore.
