Day 7: Odessa to Kermit
Got an early start - I keep waiting for this West Texas wind! The plan worked: just 45 miles to Kermit before the projected 45mph headwinds kicked in. Had a cross breeze which was never against us and we clipped off the miles, got in by 10am, even too early for early check-in at the Holiday Inn. We had a big breakfast before we left, topped off our bottles at a Pilot 6 miles away at the edge of town and headed out toward Kermit. Someone warned us of the crazy drivers and truckers at the gas station, but we had a nice wide, fairly clean shoulder to ride on. Most truck moved into the other lane to give us even more room to pass. I can tell Jude’s body is a bit tired, but mentally he has revived with someone to draft and work together. I pulled for most of the day, but he pulled us into Kermit. On top of the lack of promised wind, it was cloudy and cooler. We stopped twice and had some water but mainly cruised just to get it done early. The first half or so we were doing 13-15mph and got stopped at all the lights in Odessa. The last half we were averaging 17-21mph without working very hard. Tomorrow will be more than twice the mileage, so we’re resting up physically and mentally (though we did go for a quick 3 mile run together). Lunch was PB&J, dinner will be at the Pilot gas station, looking forward to a nap now!
