Wadjemup day 3

So today is a lovely sunny day with clear skies and a warm sun.  We took a free tour - Salt, Settlers and Survivors tour.  These are done by Volunteers that come over from the mainland.

I thought I would take 1 more photo of Perth as it was so clear today

looking like a beautiful day here on the island

While I can't remember everything the tour guide said, I will endeavour to tell you about what I can remember.  The island was settled some time in 1820's-30's by people on the mainland.    They were allocated land and some began businesses like a salt works and growing wheat (growing wheat didn't last long as after a few years the ground was not nutrient enough to sustain it - I mean it is just sand here!)

We passed the renovated buildings that were formerly the prison and also the reform center for juveniles.  And then onto the cemetery

then onto a lookout to see the windmill and salt lakes

windmill plus 8000 solar panels are responsible for providing electricity for desalinating the water the island uses as drinking water

that is all I can remember about the tour!  It is about 45mins long but we took about 1 hour 10 as the guy liked to talk and we spoke about other things.  He was very informative.  After the tour we took a detour via the bakery to get some more of that lovely multigrain bread and a couple of shots of me and some Quokkas!
