Day 58: Like a Boat Fighting through Waves
Day 58: Wednesday, 6 July 1983
Start: Campground, Hirson, France
End: Campground, Boiry-Notre-Dame, France
Heavy rain last night. Everything wet this morning. Late start. Wasted time in Hirson trying to find pastry and juice. Weak start over more low hills. Not high, but incessant. Two slow detours around two bridges being repaired. First thunderstorm hit but I ducked into a cafe and hung out for awhile. Stayed dry. Second one hit and there was no cover, so I got wet. Kept going.
Passing numerous WWI cemeteries and monuments. Lunch standing up straddling Bob on the side of the road. I expected flat terrain here. No. Constant undulations. Steady rolling ups and downs. No flat sailing. By lunch I was bored, by afternoon tired, by evening sick of the same ups and downs. Like fighting through waves in a boat. Dinner from reserve food supplies on the side of the road.
Nice campground. Just east of Arras. No one else around.
Forgettable day.
Nothing else to report.
