Day 18: in Alkmaar

Having booked two nights in Alkmaar, we did make noises about a possible bike ride on our 'day off', to explore the wider area. However, lethargy and wind prevailed.

Instead, we walked- thoroughly- around the old town and investigated the cheese museum. Disappointingly, the two other museums had taken the day off, as they're wont to do on a Monday.

The Grote Kerk, a truly massive brick edifice opened in 1470, is no longer a place of worship but was advertising an enticing exhibition called Dutch Mechanisms. We would love to have explored inside - but not on a Monday obviously.  And the Stedelijk (city) museum, would have been another worth visiting, promising a Van Gogh exhibition of some sort

Anyway, back to cheese. Ask me anything about Gouda and Edam cheeses from the North Holland region. The museum had it all. It was a fascinating visit.
