How? - Southern Tier Trans USA 2025 - CycleBlaze

How?

I am doing this tour on my 2014 Seven Axiom XL. That is a custom titanium road bike. It is equipped with a Shimano Di2 (electronic) drivetrain. It has an Enve carbon cockpit (stem, seat post and fork). It has rim brakes. I replaced the original wheels last summer and will be riding DT Swiss PR1400 Oxic wheels. These are light Aluminum wheels and other particularly aero. I decided to use those because I didn't want to fight crosswinds and I didn't want to have to worry about stopping on wet carbon rims on a long descent.

I have been using Continental 5000 S/TR tubeless tires for several years. I normally run 25 mm wide tires. For this tour I am running 28 mm tires in the rear (the widest that my brakes will accommodate. I am using the longer lived version, 5000 AS/TR. I use Orange Seal sealant in the tires.

I normally use Shimano SPD-SL (road) cleats and shoes. They have a nice wide surface that reduces foot hot spots, IMHO. However, they are terrible to walk in. So, partly at the suggestion of other people on the ride, I am using Shimano SPD (mountain 2-bolt style) cleats and some XC shoes that fasten with a Boa-style closure. I got some touring pedals that clips on only a single side but have a wider base than the XC-style pedals. I thought about getting trail-style pedals, but my son, who works in the bike industry, suggested they might be heavy.

I have a aero bars that I use because it gives me another hand position. That's important because I have developed some arthritis in my hands, probably from too many hours of keyboarding. I have an Ortlieb 3L seat bag. I normally use a very small bag, but got this so I can carry rain gear and lunch. I also have a small tri bag on the top tube that I am keeping hand santizer and a snack in. I tried a bigger tri bag, but my top tube is kind of short and it got in the way of standing over the bike. I have used a Zefal frame pump for many years because they just plain work well. I have had CO2 cartridges fail, and hate how the CO2 leaks out so quickly. However, I wanted to free up some space for the tri bag, and the frame pump rattles a bit on rough roads. So, I did some research and bought a Silca Tattico mini-pump that mounts next to my water bottle. That pump is expensive (but I got mine on sale). However, it is well made, works well, and doesn't rattle. Hopefully I won't need it. I am carrying plugs and a couple tubes in case of flats.

I have a drive side 4iii Precision power meter. I am using a Hammerhead Karoo 3 head unit that I will use to record rides and track the routes. I have a Garmin Varia light/radar that is nice for showing what is behind. I am using a Lights and Motion front light and have a Lights and Motion 1200 lumen headlight that I can use if needed.

I heard someone say that for a long tour you should by 3 of the best pairs of shorts you can afford. I bought two pairs of Perl Izumi Expedition series bib shorts. They have a quite thick and dense pad. I also have a pair of Velocio shorts that are more of a suspender style. I will use these 3 on longer days. I have 3 other sets of bib shorts with thinner pads that I will use on shorter days. I have used all of these in training and they work well.

An important part of the how is getting fit to do the ride. It was a bit tough because I couldn't start until October. I did a lot of long rides on the North Central Rail Trail because it is relatively flat and good for aerobic base work. I rode 560 miles in October (more than double September), 725 in November, and 624 in December, 572 in January, and 389 in the first half of February. I did a lot of those outside, but into December and January I did a lot inside on a smart trainer. I hate riding indoors. I prefer to do it while watching TV. I watched a lot of episodes of Yellowstone and Ravens football games, including one 3.5 hour session that was brutal. Because the tour started in FL, and I have family in the Fort Myers area, we came down to FL on January 15. Between then a the start of the tour we did a lot of riding on various trails in FL. This includes on Sanibel Island, and the Jacksonville-Baldwin, Gainesville Hawthorne, Marjorie Harris Carr, James A. van Fleet, and Withlacoochie trails. My longest training weeks were 225 miles (Jan 27-Feb 2) and 218 miles (Nov 25-Dec 1). I did 2 metric centuries. I spent a lot of time at first concentrating on aerobic base. For a month I followed a Strava training plan that included a lot of longer threshold intervals on the trainer. In FL I have done a number of longer rides at tempo pace. I typically plan rides based on RPE and power.

I did my last ride today, on February 14. I rode 26 miles on the southern part of the Withlacoochie trail. I hammered the whole ride and set a 40k PR  on that ride, so I think I am in good physical shape for the ride. What worries me is weather, camping night after night, and having the right clothing and gear with me.
