Day 22: Merryville to Silsbee

Last night we stayed on the grounds of the Merryville Historical Society Museum. The society prepared dinner and breakfast for us. Both were amazing. Dinner included fried shrimp, alligator and oysters, French fries, several different dips (including one with crawfish in it), seafood gumbo, rice, dirty rice, hush puppies, and crawfish étouffée. There several varieties of cakes for dinner. For breakfast we had cowboy eggs (eggs, French fries, ham, and bacon), sausage patties, biscuits (with gravy that I opted not to try), butter and jelly. Their hospitality was amazing.
I went to bed around 8:30 again last night and took a diphenhydramine and Mucinex DM. I woke up a couple of times and once had a bit of a coughing fit. However, the other times I felt good. I woke up at about 5:00 and decided to get up then as I needed to prepare breakfast. At the map meeting last night it was discovered that the RWGPS route deviated from the Southern Tier route by routing us along a busy road that we were told had no shoulder. BD updated the RWGPS route, but instead of a 60 mile day it was 72. Given the forecast and the length, I kind of didn't want to ride. But I thought that wasn't a good reason. I wasn't coughing and didn't have a a fever, so I suited up to ride. One mistake I made is that I should have used a better pair of shorts since it was scheduled to be a long ride.
The ride went well. PB and JW had flats early in the ride. I left a little after 8:00. I took lube and a rain with me, but it didn't need it. I stuffed my rain jacket under my shirt and put my pants in my set bag. I made a meat and cheese sandwich with mayo for lunch and also took a kind bar and a couple of nutrigrain bars.
I stopped at convenience store in Kirbyville at about mile 30. I got a Payday, which I saved, a milk, and refilled my water bottle. I drank the milk and ate a kind bar. I stopped at a convenience store in Spurger, about mile 48, and ate my sandwich and the Payday. SR had passed me while I was taking pictures on the Neches River bridge. He was flying today. I could see BW up ahead. We met at Spurger and BW and I rode the rest of the way together. My rear end was really hurting so I took a couple of ibuprofen at about 55 and stopped again about mile 66 to take some weight off. I bought white Reese's and ate it too. My legs felt good.
We are staying in an RV resort. I did some laundry to I will have enough to make it to Austin (we arrive Thursday). Otherwise I would run out of shorts.
I got a low battery warning on my Varia today, but it lasted the whole way.
Today's ride: 72 miles (116 km)
Total: 1,049 miles (1,688 km)
