Goodbye France, Hello Portugal: Good riddance van, hello bike
We left St-Jean-Du-Luz this morning, and stopped for a couple of hours in Biarritz, before heading to Bordeaux. We fly out of Bordeaux tomorrow to Lisbon, Portugal where we will finally get back on our bikes for a couple of weeks.....Yeh!! I will not be sorry to turn back the van, but it did serve it's purpose.
Having the van, and being a tourist in a car, as opposed to a bike, reconfirmed our opinion, that you do see a country so much better on a bike. You don't notice near as much in a car, as you do on a bike, and not much happens in a car, while on a bike, there is always something that makes you chuckle, or not. You also get a lot more, and better photos on a bike, because you cannot just stop a car on a seconds notice. Plus, and it's a BIG plus, you can consume croissants, baguettes, and gelato everyday on a bike, and there is no guilt!
We have really enjoyed out time in France. We have seen some amazing countryside, including, beautiful river valleys, vineyards, coastal beaches, and the mountains. Much of this we owe to our good friend, Christian, who guided us along the way, via phone, as to where we should go, and what we should see in his beautiful country, as well as his hospitality in his home for three days. We thank you again, dear friend.
France is a cyclists paradise. They have dedicated cycle routes everywhere. The only difficulty is choosing which fabulous route to take. And of course, they have amazing wine! We are really going to miss the wine!
Goodbye France, Portugal here we come.
